Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can I use NDIS to send and receive native 802.11 frames?

A. No. At least not on "Big Windows".

Windows does not support "native Wi-Fi" - at least through Windows Server 2003.

Future versions of Windows may include "native Wi-Fi" support.

Windows CE .NET includes some "native 802.11" support. The available documentation is not sufficient to determine the actual extent of this support and whether native 802.11 frames can actually be sent and received. See:

Native 802.11 Support in Windows CE .NET

If you must send and receive native 802.11 frames, then you probably will need to work with specific adapter vendors. The adapter vendors may have proprietary interfaces that allow access to native 802.11 frames. Or, they may consent to providing you with necessary for you to develop a custom NDIS miniport that provides private access to native 802.11 frames.
